JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (WJHL) — ETSU football opened preseason camp earlier this week and head coach Will Healy isn’t shying away from lofty expectations.
After entering last season as a first-year head coach, Healy said he has already noticed a greater sense of confidence and urgency from his team during the opening days of practice. While the Buccaneers still have nearly a month to prepare before kickoff, Healy said he keeps sharing his optimistic approach with his players.
“I keep telling them, I want to go 16-0. I want to win a national championship,” Healy said. “What gives us the best chance to be able to do that? That’s the only thing I can control right now.”
Rather than focusing solely on wins and losses, Healy said his emphasis remains on building the program through accountability, culture and daily improvement, believing those are the factors that will ultimately put ETSU in position to compete.
“If I could tell you one thing right now that’s guaranteed to win us 16 straight games, I would do it and pay for it,” Healy said. “I just think the ‘bigger than football’ aspects, the things that keep me at peace with how we are running a program, are the only things that I can control, and that’s what I enjoy about it.”
The Buccaneers open the 2026 season on Aug. 29 when they host Campbell at William B. Greene Jr. Stadium.
