For the most part, the New York Jets have done what every NFL team hopes to accomplish by the time July arrives, except for finding a long-term answer at the game's most important position.
Geno Smith is the bridge at quarterback, and even in that, there are immediate concerns.
Sure, they can trade for a backup quarterback if they desire, but backups are often such for a very good reason. Unless this Cade Klubnik experiment works out, finding the long-term answer may have to wait until next April's 2027 NFL Draft.
The roster is largely set. Draft picks have signed. Veterans have settled into new surroundings, and the focus is beginning to shift toward training camp at the Atlantic Health Jets Training Center. That doesn't necessarily mean general manager Darren Mougey is finished.
Championship rosters are rarely built in one wave. Good front offices remain alert throughout the summer, looking for experienced veterans who can strengthen depth before the regular season begins. According to ESPN's Aaron Schatz, the Jets have one obvious move still sitting in front of them.
His suggestion? Sign veteran defensive lineman Larry Ogunjobi.
The Jets have spent much of the offseason addressing both the present and the future.
Ogunjobi could give New York valuable insurance over the course of a 17-game season. At 32, he wouldn't be expected to carry the defensive front. Instead, he'd provide experienced depth, versatility, and another proven body capable of keeping the interior fresh throughout the season, but would New York actually make this move? That's the million-dollar question. Pun intended.
The Jets have already been among the NFL's busiest teams this offseason, but successful organizations rarely stop searching for ways to improve. Injuries are inevitable, and defensive line depth often becomes one of the biggest determining factors over a long season.
There's an old saying. A team can never have too many good defensive linemen. Whether the answer is Ogunjobi or another veteran still on the market, Schatz's suggestion reinforces something many around the league already understand.
The Jets have come a long way this offseason, but nothing is preventing them from taking one final step before training camp begins.
If Mougey believes another veteran can strengthen the rotation without sacrificing future flexibility, it wouldn't be surprising to see New York make one more move before meaningful football returns.
