Could the Houston Texans bring in another linebacker ahead of the NFL season?

Given that No. 3 linebacker E.J. Speed is expected to miss most of the regular season, plus the youth and inexperience of names behind starters Henry To'oTo'o and Azeez Al-Shaair, addressing the position could be a priority before Week 1. While nothing is set in stone now, timing could change everything, especially if Houston doesn't see progress from young guns like Wade Woodaz and Adien Fisher.

With just a few weeks standing between the offseason and the start of training camp, ESPN's Aaron Schatz believes the Texans could make one more move on their to-do list to feel as if they're complete. Given his experience and willingness to play everywhere, adding in former Buffalo Bills linebacker Shaq Thompson seems like a logical move for depth.

"There aren't a lot of holes on Houston's roster, nor are there a lot of pending free agents for 2027 who need to be re-signed," Schatz wrote. "However, the Texans could use some depth at linebacker since E.J. Speed tore his quad and is out indefinitely.

"There are a number of depth linebackers who can compete to be the third linebacker, including Jake Hansen, rookie Wade Woodaz and former Patriot Marte Mapu. An addition like Thompson might also make sense. He played 59% of defensive snaps for the Bills last season and had 56 tackles, but the Texans might also consider veterans such as former Raider Elandon Roberts or Mapu's former Patriots teammate Jahlani Tavai."

Thompson, a former first-round pick by the Carolina Panthers in 2015, has seen his career hindered by injuries. Last season with the Bills, he was limited to 12 games, totaling 56 tackles with just one sack.

The Texans truly don't need a linebacker. Even if Thompson were to sign the deal, he's not a lock to make the team anyway. Adding in competition would at least strengthen the defense and add more competition at a spot that's missing a No. 3 option, so while Thompson might not be the first option, he should be considered a name to watch.
