It couldn't be more clear that the Chicago Cubs need to add starting pitching before the MLB trade deadline.
The question isn't so much a matter of if they'll do it, but who they'll end up with.
"Cade Horton was supposed to be the team's big swing-and-miss guy, and he threw 7⅓ innings before going down with an elbow injury that required season-ending surgery," ESPN's Buster Olney wrote on Wednesday. "The Cubs hoped that Justin Steele could come back from his own injury and be a mainstay in their rotation, but that hasn't happened, as he suffered a setback early in the season. A pricey trade was made for Edward Cabrera this past offseason, and he suffered a major leg injury in June, from which he is slowly working his way back. Jameson Taillon, who earns the highest salary of all the pitchers on Chicago's roster, was just designated for assignment."

There are a lot of options to choose from to help solve these woes, at least on paper.
"They're fortunate in that this seems to be a position with plenty of options," Olney writes.
Olney goes on to name seven options:
- Freddy Peralta
- Clay Holmes
- Robbie Ray
- Kevin Gausman
- Reid Detmers
- Tarik Skubal
- Casey Mize
Peralta and Holmes are both very obvious candidates to move from the stumbling Mets. Ray is in a similar boat with the Giants.
Gausman, Detmers, Skubal and Mize would all be strong acquisitions, if their respective teams choose to make such moves.
The trade deadline is Aug. 3, so the Cubs have less than a week to figure this out. But they should be in a position to make something positive happen for their pitching staff.
