One of the most noteworthy comments from SEC Media Days came from commissioner Greg Sankey earlier in the week, who spoke about the real possibility of the conference breaking away from the NCAA.
A secession would change the landscape of college sports in unfathomable ways, but ESPN college football insider Pete Thamel spoke about the challenges the conference would face in an attempt to leave the NCAA.
Talking with Rich Eisen on his show, Thamel mentioned a couple of potential difficulties with Sankey's potential master plan.
"If they are to break away, would the television contract that goes through 2036 allow that, want that?" Thamel wondered out loud.
Thamel continued, "Would the House settlement, which I believe everybody signed up for, for I believe nine more years, the multi-billion dollar settlement that really runs college sports in a lot of ways right now that people don't acknowledge? Like can you break out of that, and start your own thing?"
Even if the SEC were to successfully leave the umbrella of the NCAA and create their own super-league, Thamel wondered whether the faction of schools would garner the same attention.
"Would it be of national interest if the SEC didn't play anyone else, and only played each other?" Thamel posited. "Now certainly, look, the ratings bear out."
These are just some of the many questions that would arise if the SEC decided to take action on their threat to leave the NCAA.
