The Philadelphia Eagles didn’t draft Cole Payton to sit quietly. They may have drafted him as a project or a potential backup option, but he certainly isn't in town for no reason. Following the 2026 NFL Draft and his fifth-round selection, theories are all over the place, including a few suggesting he was added to move.

ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr. offered a glimpse into what Payton’s early role could look like, and it’s anything but traditional. Might he be more than a developmental quarterback? Kiper thinks so. He gives the Eagles an 'A' for an outstanding weekend of work, and he gives his thoughts on a possible early role for the young dual-threat QB.

"Cole Payton probably won't beat out Tanner McKee or Andy Dalton for QB2 behind Jalen Hurts, but he ran for 777 yards and 13 touchdowns last season. I think Mannion could use him in some packages. Payton runs a 4.56 at 232 pounds, so I'm envisioning some sort of Taysom Hill role in Philadelphia. As a passer, he's very accurate despite a long delivery."

That's where things get interesting. On paper, Payton enters a crowded quarterback room behind Jalen Hurts. The path to a traditional backup role isn't immediate, but that may not be Philadelphia's plan anyway.

At 6-foot-3, 232 pounds with the aforementioned 4.5 speed, Payton brings a blend of size and athleticism that opens the door to creative usage. His production for the North Dakota State Bison, both as a passer and runner, suggests he's comfortable operating outside of structure. That versatility matters because in today's NFL, offenses are constantly searching for ways to create mismatches and stress defenses. Players who can line up in multiple spots and execute quickly become valuable. Under new offensive coordinator Sean Mannion, the Eagles are expected to evolve. Payton could be part of that evolution.

Short-yardage packages. Red-zone wrinkles, designed quarterback runs, Gadget plays that force defenses to account for an extra variable... That's where a player like Payton can carve out an early role while continuing to develop as a passer, and if Kiper's vision proves accurate, it won't take long for him to see the field.

This isn't about replacing anyone, at least not yet. It's about adding something new. The Eagles didn't just draft a quarterback. They drafted an option, one that can be deployed in ways that don't always show up on a depth chart, and if used correctly, Cole Payton won't have to wait long to make an impact because sometimes, the fastest way onto the field isn't through the traditional path. It's through creativity.
