The New England Patriots signed Dre'Mont Jones in the offseason, but ESPN's Seth Walder did not like the signing.
Walder gave the Patriots' offseason a B-minus grade in his assessment of every team's offseason. He felt like the addition of A.J. Brown was the biggest move of the offseason, and Mike Onwenu taking a pay cut was his favorite move. The team had just 35 sacks in the regular season last year, and lost one of its biggest producers in K'Lavon Chaisson.
"One area that still looks a bit weak is edge rusher," Walder wrote on Tuesday. "New England lost K'Lavon Chaisson in free agency after a solid season and replaced him with Jones. Putting aside that Chaisson signed with the Commanders for a cheaper contract than Jones was signed to, I would rather have held on to Chaisson, as Jones recorded a pass rush win rate at edge in just the 22nd percentile."
Jones had seven sacks last season between the Patriots and Tennessee Titans. Chaisson had 7.5 sacks in 16 games, but he played fewer snaps than Jones.
Jones could be a great addition for the Patriots and may actually be an underrated signing. He ended up signing a three-year, $36.5 million deal with the Patriots and should benefit from the team's coaching. Vrabel and his staff will look to get the most out of Jones and maximize his ability.
