The New England Patriots went into the offseason with edge rusher being one of their top positions of need. They replaced K'Lavon Chaisson with Dre'Mont Jones and drafted promising rookie pass-rusher Gabe Jacas in the second round of the 2026 NFL Draft.

Should the team consider making another move on a veteran contributor to join the likes of Jones and Harold Landry III?

That's what Bleacher Report's Christopher Knox suggested in a recent piece about Arizona Cardinals' standout defender Josh Sweat, a former Pro Bowler and Super Bowl champion. Sweat is coming off a career-best 2025 season that saw him record 12 sacks, four forced fumbles, two passes defended and 30 combined tackles.

The Patriots need additional pass-rushing help, and Sweat could be the answer.

"While the Patriots are busy monitoring things with Brown, they should also have an eye on Sweat," Knox wrote. "While New England made a stunning push to Super Bowl LX this past season, it didn't exactly benefit from an elite pass rush. The Patriots' defense recorded just 34 sacks, 7.5 of which came from K'Lavon Chaisson, who is now with the Washington Commanders. The Patriots are bringing back sack leader Harold Landry III (8.5 sacks), added Dre'Mont Jones in free agency, and used a second-round pick on Gabe Jacas. If they hope to make another Super Bowl run in 2026, though, they'd be wise to round out the rotation with Sweat."

The addition of a potential game-wrecker like Sweat would add significantly more firepower to the Patriots' defensive front. But what would it cost?

The proposed price tag for Sweat's services, per Knox, would be a 2027 fourth-round pick that could potentially become a third-rounder.

With a possible trade for Philadelphia Eagles star wideout A.J. Brown looming in the background, should the Patriots consider giving up more draft capital for a 29-year-old edge rusher, or would they be better off trusting the process with Jacas?

It's something to think about.
