The Seattle Mariners got some good news on Wednesday night as utility player Brendan Donovan began his rehab assignment with the ACL Mariners.

Donovan has missed two months of time with a groin strain that's related to a sports hernia surgery that he had last season with the St. Louis Cardinals. He had already been on the injured list before that issue and has played in only 25 of 97 games so far.

He went 0-for-3 in his rehab start with three strikeouts and a walk. There is no clearcut timetable for his return to the Mariners, but it's fair to assume that he'll need at least a week of rehab games, perhaps making him an option to come off the injured list before the team's critical road trip against the Texas Rangers and Los Angeles Dodgers that begins on July 24.

Speaking on the most recent edition of the 'Refuse to Lose Territory' podcast, ESPN MLB Insider Buster Olney spoke about the situation with Donovan and his health.

"Yeah. The one thing is that you understand if you're the Mariners with Brendan Donovan, if you're the Yankees with Aaron Judge, if you are the Dodgers with Blake Snell, this is the time of year where you have to get it right. You can't rush a player back and risk the possibility of an injury because you're going to run out of calendar.

I've read, for example, about a couple of injuries where the writers are saying, "Well, they think that they're going to be examined, and maybe they get them back in September." And you're looking at the calendar like 'there's not enough time for that.'

You have to get it right. If you're the Mariners and you're handling a Brendan Donovan, or, for that matter, Julio Rodriguez coming back from the concussion, which is always a touchy injury, I've talked to players who've gone through that. Some feel like they recover really quickly. Other guys struggle a little bit longer. I think teams will tend to err on the side of caution."

When Donovan has played, he's been excellent for the M's, posting a .274 batting average and an OPS+ of 141. He also has a .386 on-base percentage.

The Mariners will open up the second half of the season on Friday night against the San Francisco Giants. First pitch is set for 7:10 p.m. PT as Landon Roupp pitches for the Giants. The Mariners haven't announced a starter as of this posting.
