The New England Patriots waited until Round 3 to take a wide receiver in the 2025 NFL Draft. But they still managed to take a receiver that ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr. adores.
That would be Washington State’s Kyle Williams, who New England took with the No. 69 overall pick.
Kiper, ESPN’s longtime draft analyst, gushed over Williams in his immediate analysis on the network’s draft broadcast, calling him an “electric” talent.
“One of the more under-publicized stars in college football at Washington State out in Pullman. ... He did it against quality competition. He’s good against everybody, Kiper said. ”The kid can fly. He is outstanding with the ball in his hands after the catch. He can go deep. He can beat you in the middle of the field. He’s a really good route runner.”
Williams was a popular projection for the Patriots on Day 2. A versatile receiver with great speed, Williams checks a lot of boxes for what teams normally like to see in receivers.
The 5-foot-11, 190-pound receiver ran a blazing time of 4.40 seconds in the 40-yard dash at the NFL Scouting Combine back in November. However, Kiper notes that Williams is more than just fast.
“This kid is electrifying ... This kid can go in a blink, 40 yards. He is fast. I’ll tell you what – versatile. He’s not a guy who’s a one-trick pony. He’s not just a deep threat. He will do the dirty work. He’ll block. He’ll go in traffic and make tough catches. I love Kyle Williams one of the most underrated receivers in this draft.”
Williams was the third player taken by the Patriots in the draft this year. Previous picks were LSU tackle Will Campbell at No. 4 and Ohio State running back TreVeyon Henderson at No. 38.
