ENG vs PAK 2026: England announces Test squad vs Pakistan

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) announced England's squad for the first two Tests of the three-match Test series against Pakistan.

This will be the first Test series since Ben Stokes' retirement and the sacking of Brendon McCullum. Joe Root begins his captaincy after the Bazball era, while legendary English batter Marcus Trescothick is the interim coach before Stephen Fleming begins his tenure against South Africa later this year.

Lawrence returns to England's Test setup for the first time since September 2024 after enjoying one of the best domestic seasons of his career.

The Surrey batter is the second-highest run scorer in Division One of the County Championship with 788 runs at 65.66, including five centuries and is expected to fill the middle-order vacancy left by Stokes.

Meanwhile, Pope also forced his way back into the squad after responding impressively to being dropped during the Ashes and New Zealand series. The former vice-captain has scored 510 runs at 56.66, including five scores above fifty, although he is not guaranteed an immediate return to the starting XI.

National selector Marcus North praised both returning players while explaining the balance of the squad.

"Dan Lawrence returns following an exceptional season so far with Surrey and we believe he has the right level of experience, maturity and skill to complement our middle order," North said.

"Jordan Cox is well regarded as one of the most exciting talents in English cricket and will have the opportunity to bat at three in place of Jacob Bethell," he added.
