  • Jordan Henderson, 36, fell over an advertising board and landed awkwardly before he was given oxygen and stretchered off the field after the Round of 16 victory
  • England beat Mexico 3-2 at Mexico City's Azteca Stadium and will play Norway in the quarterfinals on Saturday, July 11

England has reached the quarterfinals of the World Cup after beating Mexico, but one player could potentially be watching from the sidelines after he injured his wrist in a freak accident after the game.

Jordan Henderson, who plays for Brentford in the Premier League, was named among the substitutes for England's 3-2 victory at Mexico City's historic Azteca Stadium on Sunday, July 5.

After the Round of 16 game, the players headed over to their fans behind one of the goals to sing "Wonderwall," the Oasis classic that has become England's unofficial World Cup anthem this summer.

It was during these celebrations that Henderson, who has played 91 times for his country since making his debut in 2010, fell over an advertising board, landed awkwardly and remained down on the floor.

Teammates including Dan Burn and Declan Rice watched on before players and staff formed a huddle around him as he received medical treatment. The former Liverpool star was given oxygen and taken from the field on a stretcher.

England head coach, Thomas Tuchel, later told the BBC that Henderson, 36, had suffered "a quite serious" injury to his wrist and was in the hospital.

Per ESPN, Henderson stayed in Mexico City on Sunday night with a member of the England entourage rather than flying back with the rest of the squad to the team's training base in Kansas City in Missouri.

England opened the scoring at the Azteca, with Real Madrid's Jude Bellingham getting two goals before Julián Quiñones pulled one back for Mexico to make it 2-1 to England at the halfway mark, per a BBC match report.

England defender Jarell Quansah received a red card in the second half, before England's Harry Kane and Mexico's Raúl Jiménez both scored penalty kicks for their respective nations, the outlet reported.

Despite not playing, Henderson received a yellow card himself in the closing stages of the game.
