A fifth Test defeat in a row for England and little evidence of the great reset promised for the Nations Championship after their humbling Six Nations campaign. South Africa ran in seven tries in a statement victory that ramps up the pressure on Steve Borthwick.
Once again discipline let Borthwick’s side down, just as it did so often during the Six Nations. They finished the contest with 13 men following yellow cards for Tommy Freeman and Guy Pepper, and South Africa turned the scoreline into the rout they had promised from early in the first half, finishing with tries by Malcolm Marx and Ben-Jason Dixon.

There was a lack of ruthlessness in England’s finishing too, and at times there were simply outpowered by the relentless physicality of a Springboks side who were playing their first game together since last November.

South Africa had threatened to run away with his game after just 13 minutes, when they had hit England with a blitzkrieg of tries by Thomas du Toit, Cheslin Kolbe and Kurt-Lee Arendse but late first-half tries by Ellis Genge and George Martin had given a glimmer of hope that England could kick on to secure what would have been their first victory at Ellis Park since 1972.
What power and what a score!
England, with one last chance before HT, get there, and it's George Martin with a fantastic try. Fin Smith adds the extras, and England, who looked dead and buried after 20 minutes, reduce the deficit to 3.
HT: 17-14 pic.twitter.com/Dshorzj59E
— ITV Rugby (@ITVRugby) July 4, 2026
But it proved to be false hope, despite some positive moments. Fin Smith at times played with a freedom normally reserved for his club Northampton, Martin brought massive presence to the collisions, while Alex Coles, who crossed for a second half try, Ollie Chessum and Genge brought some fight to the forward exchanges.
Henry Pollock was booed on his entrance in the final quarter, but aside from a few neat touches, he was a marginal figure as the Springboks turned the screw in ruthless fashion by dominating the second half, with tries by Grant Williams and Jesse Kriel taking the game away from England before their final flourish, after Freeman and Pepper had been sent to the bin within two minutes of each other. A horrible night for England.

England head coach Steve Borthwick speaking to the BBC
“How we responded to that first 10 minutes was very good, but ultimately we could not convert our opportunities. We gave a penalty away early in the second half, and once South Africa are in our 22, they are very dangerous. They have power.
“We had opportunities; if that pass goes to hand from Fin Smith to Seb Atkinson. The age profile of the two teams is very different. It is always important to get back to winning ways.”

South Africa captain Pieter-Steph du Toit
“It was a tough game for us. You know England are always going to come back and never stop fighting to the last moment. We had to keep to our plans and execute our plans. Unfortunately we lost some control in the second half of the first half but at the end of the game we made ourselves proud. Playing for the Springboks and pulling on this jersey is a massive honour. The South African fans are the best and hopefully we can make them proud for the rest of the season.”

Your reaction
- Robert Uplands: “They were never ever going to get close. Just not good enough. England’s run of rubbish rugby results continues.”
- John Langdale: “Borthwick should have gone after the disastrous Six Nations. If that didn’t do it, it’s hard to imagine what will.”
- David Hickman: “We should at least be trying to stay in the same street as them, even though they’re world champions. Still, we’re in with a shout of beating Japan and Italy, at least. Aren’t we?”
- Tony Amirite: “We were in it at half time. Bad discipline crept in. We looked good for periods, we just need a better coach. Still have time to improve before the RWC.”
- Jimmy Jones: “Can the RFU please sack Borthwick now.”

“It was a tough old Test match. I thought we started very well but all we know how good the English team is, we knew they would come back. At half-time, we asked serious questions of ourselves and the way we played at the start of the second half, like the start of the first, was incredible. Congratulations to the players who came off the bench. We were very accurate in the first 20 minutes but some ill-discipline then crept in and let all the pressure off. We defended well in patches. It was a great performance from the lads and we will rest up and look forward to next week.”

Another penalty goes South Africa’s way as Cowan-Dickie is pinged for bringing down the maul illegally. South Africa opt for the scrum.

Freeman could be in trouble here. Willemse catches a high ball and the tackle always looked to be a bit high from Freeman. Is there head-on-head contact or maybe shoulder-to-head? There is shoulder-to-head contact but Willemse appeared to be falling backwards and some of the contact went through the body. It is definitely a penalty but how much than that is the question. Freeman is sent to the bin as it reaches the yellow-card threshold. It should absolutely though be no more than a yellow.

Verdict at the break
You must be registered for see images attach
A glimmer of hope for England with tries by Ellis Genge and George Martin just before half-time. Given how this game started, it will be Steve Borthwick’s job to hammer home to his players that there still is a way back into this game. Having seen his side blown away by three tries in 13 minutes—by Thomas du Toit, Cheslin Kolbe and Kurt-Lee Arendse—England have at least managed to regroup and stem fears that they would be routed. If South Africa had scored again, and they squandered a couple more opportunities, there would have been no way back.
But as the half wore on, England managed to get some shape into their game, and Fin Smith, perhaps realizing there was nothing to lose, has played with more of the freedom that he shows with his club side Northampton Saints. Jamie George saw a try ruled out as he was deemed to have been part of the ruck, but Genge scored from a tapped penalty after a show-and-go by Cadan Murley had given England front-foot ball, and then just before the interval, Martin powered over following a brilliant 50-22 by Smith.
Eight years ago at Ellis Park England raced into a 24-3 lead with tries by Mike Brown, Elliot Daly and Owen Farrell before the high altitude took their lungs and legs away. There look better prepared for the thin air this time, and as the half drew to a close, it was South Africa who looked more drained. Remarkably England can believe that a first victory here since 1972 is still possible.

However, the lock steps into touch before dotting down so that is a big let-off for Kolbe and South Africa.
Then, South Africa are given another let-off as Genge’s high tackle on de Allende is penalised.

The Springboks are all over England and already have two tries inside the opening six minutes. Wow. Shock and awe here at Ellis Park as the Springboks have hit England with two tries in five minutes. Steve Borthwick’s side could not have imagined a worse start. Now it is time for the national anthems. God Save The King followed by Nkosi Sikelel’ iAfrika.

One of the Zulu warriors who introduce the Springboks has been giving it large to the England team who look distinctly unimpressed by his antics.

British theme

Am I having a fever dream? The Ellis Park prematch entertainment is running a tribute to British culture which has so far featured a breakdancing James Bond flanked by beefeaters, a non-ginger Ed Sheeran, the Beatles, an obese Elton John and the Spice Girls. Extraordinary stuff.

Etzebeth ruled out

There are serious concerns around Eben Etzebeth’s long-term durability among South African journalists. Etzebeth was stood down for today’s match with concussion symptoms and has only played one match since the 2025 Autumn Internationals in which he was banned for gouging Wales’ Alex Mann. Etzebeth has been dealing with concussion problems for the past two years and his withdrawal was not unexpected.

The reason why South Africans hate Pollock
During the 2023 World Cup, South African fans appropriated Zombie, Ireland’s unofficial anthem, in honour of their head coach Rassie Erasmus by singing “he’s in your head, he’s in your head, Rassie, Rassie, Rassie”.
Now it feels like they need to pass the baton to Henry Pollock, who has done a remarkable job of triggering an entire fanbase before he has even played a single Test minute against them. England’s plane was still on the runway at Heathrow when the Northampton Saints flanker posted a relatively innocuous Instagram selfie, stating “See You Soon” with a South African flag and a drop of blood.
What followed was hundreds of replies from South African supporters and very few of them were wishing him a safe flight. “Wipe that smile off your face little boy arriving in the country where men play, not boys,” read one typically measured response.

Even getting grief from the stadium announcer!

Lovely little welcome from the stadium announcer to the few visiting England supporters inside Ellis Park. “It is not going to be easy, it is not going to be over quickly, and you are probably not going to enjoy most of it.”

This is what England must do to upset the Springboks
Scrum
An obvious one, but England need parity at the scrum at the bare minimum. Borthwick’s side will not have much of a better opportunity to achieve it, either, given that the starting front five on Saturday will be virtually first choice. That does not automatically mean that the visitors on Saturday are assured scrum solidity, however, because opposite them is one of the all-time great scrummaging front rows: Ox Nche, Malcolm Marx, Thomas du Toit.
England’s scrum has improved vastly with Ellis Genge honing his craft and Joe Heyes one of the most improved players in the world, but it could be in the final 15 minutes where they come a cropper.
Expect Genge and Heyes to go deep into the match, with the likes of Fin Baxter and Will Stuart missing through injury. It will be some battle: the two scrums are the top two in the world since 2025 at winning penalties and at succeeding on the opposition ball. England also concede the fewest scrum penalties of the tier-one nations. They will need to be immaculate again on Saturday.

Last five meetings
Safe to say South Africa have got the better of England in recent years:
November 2024: England 20 South Africa 29
October 2023: England 15 South Africa 16 (World Cup semi-final)
November 2022: England 13 South Africa 27
November 2021: England 27 South Africa 26
November 2019: England 12 South Africa 32 (World Cup final)

Tough, tough challenge on and off the pitch

As we got off our minibus from Sandton to Ellis Park, we were greeted by a group of South African fans who shouted “you are the only British people here” followed quickly by “you are going to get a hiding”. The first statement is not strictly true. I spotted at least four England shirts but you get their point. As for the second part, the injury to the wretchedly unlucky George Furbank has been at least counterbalanced by the Springboks losing both Siya Kolisi and Eben Etzebeth. Still do not fancy England’s chances though.

Itoje no longer looks indispensable for England
When Martin Johnson named his England elite player squad in July 2010, there was one notable exclusion: Steve Borthwick. He had been Johnson’s captain for 20 consecutive Tests before he picked up a patellar tendon injury in the 15-15 draw against Scotland during that year’s Six Nations. But it counted for nothing when the England manager named his squad with a view to the 2011 World Cup.
Lewis Moody had been appointed as Borthwick’s successor as captain for the Six Nations final-round defeat by France and for the two-Test tour of Australia. It was a devastating blow for Borthwick, who was just 30 at the time, not least because he received the news via a phone call from Johnson while he was on honeymoon in Bali. The injury had been a form of tendinitis in his left knee, which had prevented him from playing again until the Premiership final in May – a defeat by Leicester.

One of the toughest challanges in world rugby awaits England
England take on South Africa at the historic Ellis Park in Johannesburg on the opening weekend of the new Nations Championship. The last time these sides met came back in November 2024, with South Africa running out 29-20 winners at Allianz Stadium. England’s last win over South Africa came in November 2021, when they won by just the one point. England have not travelled to South Africa since the summer of 2018. England lost that series 2-1, with their one win of the series coming in the third Test in Cape Town. They have only won twice in South Africa this century, with their last victory at Ellis Park coming all the way back in 1972 when they won 18-9.
England will be hoping to put a dismal Six Nations tournament behind them; they won just one of their five games as they finished second bottom to increase the pressure on head coach Steve Borthwick. This is the first of three Nations Championship games England will play this month, with matches against Fiji and Argentina to follow. Borthwick has made the decision to rest captain Maro Itoje this summer so his Saracens teammate Jamie George will lead the side.
“Playing South Africa at Ellis Park is one of the great Tests in world rugby and an opportunity we are excited to embrace,” said Borthwick. “We have prepared well since we arrived here last week and I sense a real excitement within the squad to get our Nations Championship campaign under way.”

South Africa thrashed the Barbarians 80-31 in Gqeberha a couple of weeks ago. The Springboks will also face Scotland and Wales this month.
“England will come to Johannesburg as determined as ever, so it is going to be a hard grind of a match, which will require us to be accurate in every facet of the game, and convert the opportunities we create into points, but they will have the same mindset, so we need to hit the ground running if we want to do well,” South Africa head coach Rassie Erasmus said. “England are a quality outfit, and we are expecting them to give everything they have in this match, so it was important to select a squad with experience combined with a few younger players, who have proved that they have what it takes to perform at this level.
“The players have worked very hard at training, and they know what it takes to perform against a side of this calibre with a good coaching team, so we hope they can transfer that effort onto the field on Saturday [today]. Similarly to us, they [England] will also want to have a good start to this exciting new competition, so we are expecting it to be a bruising encounter.”
Kick-off from Ellis Park is at 4.40pm.
