EMMETT TWP. — Preceding every Little League softball game is the all-important coin flip, where the winning side gets to choose between being the home team or the away team.
Usually, winners of the toss opt for the home designation.
But in the Michigan 10U state championship game, the Emmett Township Little League team took a different approach.
"It wasn't really a strategy, but we'd had horrible luck (with the coin flip) the whole district (tournament)," Emmett manager Matt Fahey said. "We had one home game out of the 12 of them and we really didn't play very good (in that one). So, everybody wanted to be away, win or lose. We ended up actually winning the coin toss and picked away — just out of superstition."
The gamble paid off, as Emmett eclipsed Georgetown, 5-3, to win the 10U state title in Grosse Pointe on Monday, July 20.

"It was awesome," Fahey said. "The girls can legitimately say they've been working towards it for the last three years. The whole team has been practicing, playing their butts off, taking lessons to get where they got this year. Everybody worked real hard for it."
Heading into the top of the sixth inning Monday, Emmett trailed 3-2 and was down to its final three outs. Then came a three-run rally.
"The biggest part is just that the girls maintained their composure for a whole inning," Fahey said. "From being down, having to come back that inning and then having to go into the bottom of the inning to hold that lead — it was something to see … they battled their way back."
The team's roster included Katelyn Williams, Remington Joy, Briella DePrez, Madison Onufrak, Mackenzie Pries, Harper Hitchcock, Clara Goodwin, Raya Francek, Nora Fraley, Emery Witalec, Adelynn Fahey and Mallory Schott. Mike Pries and Travis Schott both served as coaches.
"(I'm most proud of) their dedication to each other," Matt Fahey said. "Looking at the kids, if one struck out, nobody would get mad at them. They'd be a true team. They would pick each other up, cheer each other on and get each other back on a positive path."
