Los Angeles Dodgers starter Emmet Sheehan exited his start with Triple-A Oklahoma City on Saturday after just 0.2 innings pitched.
Up until Aug. 3, Sheehan had spent the entirety of the season in MLB with the Dodgers—though it hadn’t exactly gone to plan. Sheehan’s velocity fell off of a cliff at the start of the season, and his ERA rose from a solid 2.82 mark last season to 5.29 this season.
The Dodgers optioned him to Triple-A Monday, and he made his first minor-league start of the season against the Salt Lake Bees, and allowed a hit and a walk before exiting the game in the first inning. He got charged with two runs on the outing, as an inherited runner scored from second after his exit.
Sheehan’s appearance shouldn’t raise any red flags, though, as Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic reported the Dodgers intended for Sheehan to leave the game early.
“This was a pre-planned abbreviated outing for Emmet Sheehan for workload purposes with the expectation of having a normal outing next time through the rotation,” he wrote via X.
Managing Sheehan’s workload makes sense, as the right-hander has thrown more innings in 2026 than he had in any other MLB season. He threw 95.1 innings in MLB prior to his demotion, which is far more than the 73.1 he threw last season after coming back from Tommy John surgery.

Will Emmet Sheehan Still Be a Starter For the Dodgers?
Despite Sheehan’s struggles this season and the logjam they have in their rotation when everyone’s healthy, the Dodgers still view the right-hander as a starter.
“That’s something down the road,” manager Dave Roberts said. “We see him as a starter.”
It may be hard to fit Sheehan in the rotation if he returns this season, though, as LA added two more starters to their roster at the trade deadline. All-Stars Tarik Skubal and Kris Bubic—who is currently on the 60-day injured list—came to Los Angeles via trade, and Blake Snell and Tyler Glasnow are both currently on their rehab assignments as they eye second-half returns.
When all four of those players are active, the Dodgers’ rotation won’t have too much wiggle room—much less when the rotation shrinks in the postseason.
