ELKHART — Elkhart County’s minor league baseball team will not hold its fourth season this summer.
The Elkhart County Miracle have put their season “on pause” due to a late termination of a stadium contract between the city of Whiting and the Northern League. The reigning champion Northwest Indiana Oilmen have played at Oil City Stadium for over 10 years but are now without a home stadium.
“The Northern League notified us a short time ago that their stadium lease arrangement with the city of Whiting has not been renewed despite 15 years of playing there,” club founder Craig Wallin said in a press release.
“That news caused us to quickly look into other league options, but no suitable arrangements could be found on such a short notice.”
According to the Oilmen’s website, the ballclub is exploring options for an alternative location for 2027 and have suspended operations this summer.
The Northern League is currently made up of four baseball teams in northern Indiana. The Miracle are the lone team in Elkhart County with the Oilmen, Griffith Generals and Southland Vikings all in northwest Indiana. The league has experienced shrinking membership in recent years since the Miracle debuted in 2023.
Elkhart County won the Northern League title in 2024 and made it back to the championship in 2025 before losing to the Oilmen. The Miracle played one season in Nappanee before moving to American Park in Elkhart for 2024 and 2025.
Wallin says that Elkhart County intends to return to play next season, if not sooner.
