INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana – When the Emory University Eagles take the court for the NCAA Division III National Championship this Sunday at Gainbridge Fieldhouse against Mary Washington, the game represents a unique homecoming for assistant coach Charlie Copp.

While Copp is a household name in Berks County basketball circles, his journey began in the “Hoosier State.” Born in Elkhart, Indiana, Copp is returning to his birthplace to coach in the biggest game of his coaching career.

Copp, a 2000 graduate of Tulpehocken High School, remains a legendary figure in Berks County high school basketball. During his career with the Trojans, he scored 2,440 points, ranking him as the second-leading scorer in Berks County history behind Ron Krick of West Reading’s 3,174 points.

Known for his lethal range, Copp still holds the Berks County records for three-pointers in a single season (101) and a career (308).

His journey from Bernville to the national stage included a career at the University of Pennsylvania, where he was a four-year letter winner and team captain, helping the Quakers to two Ivy League titles. Copp was inducted into the Reading-Berks Basketball Hall of Fame in 2022.

The championship game is part of a historic weekend in Indianapolis, which is simultaneously hosting the Division I Final Four, the NIT, and the Division II championship.

The Emory vs. Mary Washington game tips off at 4:30 p.m. Sunday and will be televisted on ESPN+.
