The New England Patriots are nearing contract extension talks with cornerback Christian Gonzalez.

Gonzalez was a premier cover corner in 2025. The 23-year-old registered 10 passes defended and made his presence felt in the postseason. His performance in the divisional round helped the Patriots’ secondary take Houston Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud out of the game in New England's 28-16 win over Houston.

Gonzalez defined his career with two incredible passes defended against Seattle Seahawks first-team All-Pro wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba and Rashid Shaheed in the Super Bowl. With a second-team All-Pro honor to his name from 2024, Gonzalez has a body of work to garner a massive extension.

According to NBC Sports Boston’s Phil Perry, Patriots executive vice president of player personnel Eliot Wolf addressed the upcoming contract negotiations with Gonzalez at the NFL combine on Tuesday.

“Christian, obviously was good before, and made an even more significant jump this year,” Wolf said. “And he's someone that we want to work with in the future, obviously. We’ll have those conversations at the appropriate time.”

Wolf’s statement indicates that the Patriots have intentions to keep Gonzalez on their roster for the foreseeable future. The Texas native is approaching the final year of the four-year, $15.1 million deal he signed with the Patriots in 2023.

With an average annual value of $3.7 million, Gonzalez has a robust market to base his new target salary on. Dallas Cowboys cornerback DaRon Bland signed a four-year, $90 million contract extension with the Cowboys in 2025, two years after earning First-Team All-Pro honors in 2023. Denver Broncos 2024 Defensive Player of the Year Patrick Surtain makes an average of $24 million annually, while Gonzalez’s teammate, Carlton Davis, earns an average of $18 million per year.

The Patriots organization, as well as Gonzalez, have a measuring stick for future negotiations. At the appropriate time, the expectation is that both parties will convene for a potential extension in 2026.
