VANCOUVER — As the final whistle blew in Vancouver, Mohamed Salah soaked in the cheers from Egyptian fans lining BC Place. He had delivered Egypt its first-ever World Cup victory.

Long the face of Egyptian soccer, Salah further solidified himself as the best player the country has ever produced with his goal and assist, helping defeat New Zealand, 3-1, and make history for his country.

“It’s a great achievement,” Salah said. “We just do our best in the tournament to make the people happy in Egypt.”

The good energy did not come quickly for Egypt. It entered the second half down 1-0 with not much to show for offensively. Salah had been virtually invisible. Shortly after halftime, it didn’t take long for the Pharaohs to take hold of the match, with Mostafa Ziko opening the scoring in the 58th minute and Salah’s goal in the 67th minute giving Egypt its first lead of the night.

Salah then sent a corner into the box that fellow Egyptian veteran Trezeguet headed into the net to give Egypt a 3-1 lead.

“I told the guys that we can write history today,” Salah said. “I think we will be remembered for years to come.”

Egypt now sits atop Group G with four points heading into their final group stage match against Iran on Friday.
