East Union kept its season alive in dramatic fashion.
Tied with Velma Jackson at 47-47 with under 10 seconds to play, East Union’s Luke Elder received the inbounds pass and dribbled to his right. Heavily defended and with time running out, he back-pedaled out behind the 3-point arc and hoisted up a shot. Elder’s shot went in, and the Urchins came out on top 50-47 on Friday night.
“We just kind of wanted to pop Luke in the backcourt, give him the ball, set a little screen for him at the top of the key, and we told him just to try to get downhill,” East Union head coach Jim Tally said. “It’s your decision to make. If you see someone you want to kick it to, fine. If you want to take the shot, you take it, and that’s where we left it. He almost ran out of bounds, it looked like. Somehow, he stayed in and put up that corner three, and the place went nuts.”
“Wasn’t really sure what they were going to do defensively, so we just tried to get the ball into our best shot-maker’s hands and let him make a decision with it,” Tally added.
It’s Tally’s first year at East Union after previously being the head coach at Mooreville, and his Urchins are enjoying a deep playoff run.
“This is as far as I’ve ever made it, so I think it feels real good,” Tally said. “The guys always play hard, and they always play for each other. I think it’s a pretty tight-knit group, and they’ve made some big shots down the stretch. Who knows, maybe we can keep it going.”
However, East Union will have its work cut out for itself, as the Urchins will face Baldwyn on Saturday at Northeast Mississippi Community College for a spot in Jackson. Baldwyn has only suffered one loss on the year.
“Baldwyn’s got a really good team, so we’ve got our hands full with them,” Tally said. “I went and watched them play Saturday against Charleston. Very talented team, we’re going to have to play really well to give ourselves a chance. I think our guys are going to be up for the challenge, though.”
