Jun. 6—CAPSHAW — Adam Brown said it was a season five years in the making.
The East Limestone baseball coach said his team of 12 seniors had been building toward this season for a long time and it paid off in a big way. The Indians finished with a 25-11 record, won the Class 5A, Area 16 championship and reached the Elite Eight for the first time since 2015.
Because of this, Brown was chosen as The Daily's Class 5A-7A baseball coach of the year.
"It was my first time as a player or coach ever making it out of the first round (of the playoffs) and it was an unbelievable ride," Brown said. "It will forever be something I will remember."
While it may have been the best season the Indians have had in over a decade, it wasn't something that came as a surprise. With so many seniors on the roster, Brown said the team was confident going into the season.
"We had a lot of old guys with a lot of experience who had spent five long years getting to this point," Brown said. "It certainly wasn't easy because we had a tough area, but we knew we had the guys to get it done."
Brown said one of the highlights of the season was defeating Madison Academy, which finished runner-up in Class 5A last year, to win the area championship.
"A couple years ago we won the first game of the series at home against Madison Academy and then went to their place. We were up 4-0 in the bottom of the seventh, allowed five runs and ended up losing the series and our playoff spot," Brown said. "This year we're in the same scenario; we had a lead in the last inning and they loaded the bases. Then Jacob Brooks comes in and gets three big outs.
"It was kind of ironic that that's how we won the area and it was such a cool moment to see these guys that had put in so much work finally get over the hump."
While East Limestone may be losing 12 seniors, Brown said the future is bright.
"We're losing some good players, some that started since they were freshmen, but they left a stamp on this program," Brown said. "We have a lot of talented young guys coming up that have now seen what it takes to be successful. We're going in the right direction and I think East Limestone is going to be sticking around for a long time."
