Outdoor football in Chicago or Green Bay during the month of January can be greatly impacted by the weather, but the early forecast for Saturday's NFC Wild Card showdown between the Green Bay Packers and Chicago Bears at Soldier Field looks mostly mild.
According to Weather.com as of Monday, the forecast for Chicago on Saturday calls for possible rain or snow in the morning but then overcast skies and mild temps, with a high around 39 degrees, during the day and manageable temps, with a low of 25 degrees, into the night. Winds will be between 10 and 20 miles per hour, possibly with some gusts, potentially creating some tricky conditions for passing and kicking.
The conditions won't be dissimilar from the first meeting between the Packers and Bears at Soldier Field on Dec. 20. Temps were seasonably mild, and the wind was a factor.
The wind will be the one element to watch as the week unfolds and Saturday draws near. Temps in the 20s or 30s won't directly affect the game for two teams used to playing outdoors in winter conditions. Even a little precipitation before or during the game wouldn't be a major factor. But the wind can affect a lot of things, especially in terms of passing down the field and kicking and punting. A greater reliance on the run game and more difficult field goal conditions could be possible.
The record low for the Chicago area on Jan. 10 is -26, so the Packers and Bears are avoiding the bitter cold that often comes with this time of year in the Upper Midwest.
While the forecast could change slightly, Saturday night's playoff showdown at Soldier Field isn't likely to be defined by the elements. Two teams accustomed to playing outdoors will have no problems navigating the current forecast for Saturday in Chicago.
