Fans of the Boston Celtics are not going to be happy to hear that in the talks to move on from star forward Jaylen Brown, Celtics President of Basketball Operations Brad Stevens and the rest of the front office let go of the rope when it came to demanding one of the Philadelphia 76ers best players coming back in the swap.
What Boston did get for Brown was a pair of first round draft picks and a pair of second round picks plus the contract of Paul George with a whisper of a promise he might actually also be able to play basketball. But per recent comments from senior ESPN reporter Shams Charania, they were correctly demanding the sort of haul Brown should have commanded at least some of, including a certain breakout player with Philly last season.
Charania related that the "Sixers president reached out to the Celtics, (who) made offers in recent weeks" about making a trade.
"The Celtics had such a high bar on a deal," he added. "They were thinking if you're going to trade us Paul George we need four firsts, five firsts, we need a player like a VJ Edgecombe. That was the bar that was set early. There were other teams around the league that might have stopped conversations or moved on to do other deals, but the Sixers stayed with it ...they stuck around and at the end of it, they were the last team standing."
It must be noted that Boston would have had to have taken on the contract of George, Joel Embiid, or Tyrese Maxey for any such move to make sense, and with the remaining time on Embiid's deal (three seasons) and how the Sixers correctly see Maxey as part of their future, PG-13 would have to have been in the deal. Still, even that would have made more sense than what ended up coming back - as would have being patient for a better deal – or none at all.
