PHILADELPHIA —Eagles right tackle Lane Johnson revealed on Saturday that he plans to retire from the NFL after the 2026 season.
“Man, looking like this is potentially, probably going to be my last year,” Johnson said after Saturday’s practice. “Just because I am getting to that point of those priorities away from football are starting to merge. Not that I don’t enjoy. I love everything about this game and preparing for it, but it’s kind of where I am at in my career.”
Johnson said he thought about retiring after last season, but he ultimately decided to come back for the 2026 season. His oldest kid turns 13 years old in a few days, and he wants to be around more as a father.
Johnson said his mom and dad are struggling “with some health stuff,” which he revealed is the reason he was away from the team this week. Being away during their health struggles made him realize that he needs to be home more after this year.
“A lot of time away and when something comes up like that, it puts things into what matters,” Johnson said. “But I’m here. My team is supporting me, and I’m where I need to be.”
Coming off a season-ending foot injury at 36 years old, Johnson wants to prove this year that he is the best tackle in the NFL, and he believes the new scheme will make his assignments easier.
“This scheme will allow us to let loose and showcase our abilities more,” Johnson said. “I think it will be a lot of fun. So we’ll see what happens. I just want to stay healthy, f****** stay out of the tent on the sideline and f****** win some games. So that’s really it, man. And have some fun. Enjoy myself this last year.”
Johnson was drafted by the Eagles in the first round of the 2013 NFL Draft. He has been an elite player for the last decade, making six Pro Bowls, two first-team All-Pros and three second-team All-Pros.
This season, Johnson will add to his legacy one last time.
