The Philadelphia Eagles continue to add competition to their backfield. Philadelphia signed veteran running back Elijah Mitchell on Monday after hosting him as a tryout participant during the rookie minicamp on May 1-2. Mitchell joins a crowded running back room led by Saquon Barkley and gives the Eagles another experienced option as they prepare for training camp.
The 27-year-old spent part of the 2025 season with the Kansas City Chiefs and New England Patriots. He signed a futures contract with New England in February before being released earlier this offseason.
Originally selected by the San Francisco 49ers in the sixth round of the 2021 NFL Draft, Mitchell quickly emerged as one of the league's most productive young running backs. He rushed for 963 yards and five touchdowns as a rookie while helping San Francisco reach the NFC Championship Game.
Although injuries slowed his development in subsequent seasons, Mitchell has remained an intriguing player because of his vision, burst, and familiarity with zone-running concepts. Over 28 career games, Mitchell has rushed for more than 1,500 yards and scored nine touchdowns. When healthy, he has demonstrated the ability to handle a significant workload and produce explosive plays.
The Eagles have spent the offseason reshaping the depth behind Barkley. Tank Bigsby, Will Shipley, Dameon Pierce and Carson Steele are among the backs competing for roster spots and touches entering training camp.
Mitchell's addition increases that competition.
Philadelphia also hosted veteran running back Khalil Herbert during rookie minicamp, signaling the organization's desire to explore multiple options for improving depth at the position.
Barkley remains the unquestioned starter after another productive season, but the Eagles understand the importance of maintaining quality depth behind one of the league's most heavily utilized offensive weapons.
Mitchell now gets an opportunity to revive his career with a Super Bowl contender and compete for a role in one of the NFL's deepest offensive backfields.
With training camp approaching, the competition behind Barkley has become even more crowded.
