Eagles rumor offers hope key free agent will stay in Philadelphia originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The expectation was the contract of Philadelphia Eagles tight end Dallas Goedert would void on Wednesday, which would have officially made him a free agent.
However, after the league put out the transactions list at 4 p.m. ET, Goedert was not on it, which was at least somewhat surprising.
The reason behind that, according to The Athletic's Zach Berman, is that the Eagles and Goedert have pushed the void date back to Friday, which offers hope that Philadelphia and Goedert will work something out to stay together.
"The two sides agreed to push the deadline back to Friday, a league source told The Athletic," Berman reported. "The procedural move allows the Eagles and Goedert to try to work out a deal to keep Goedert in Philadelphia and even preserve salary cap space."
If Goedert's contract voids, the Eagles will incur a $20 million cap charge for 2026. But if the Eagles and their tight end can work out a new deal, that cap hit will almost certainly be lowered and Goedert will remain in Philly.
It has been a rough free agency period for the Eagles thus far.
While the Eagles have signed cornerback Riq Woolen and tight ends Johnny Mundt and Grant Calcaterra, the team has also lost nine players, a list headlined by Jaelan Phillips, Nakobe Dean and Reed Blankenship.
Retaining Goedert would be a rare bit of good news for the Eagles' offseason, and his return would be even more crucial if Philly decides to trade A.J. Brown this offseason.
Both sides have expressed an interest in staying together in the past, and now Goedert and the Eagles will have a bit more time to try and get that done.
