The Philadelphia Eagles recently made Jalen Carter the NFL’s highest-paid defensive tackle. His peers continue to provide evidence that the organization made the correct decision.
Carter landed at No. 29 in the NFL Top 100 Players of 2026, moving up 14 spots after ranking No. 43 one year ago.
The annual list is determined by votes from NFL players, making Carter’s latest recognition another indication of how opponents view his impact. Statistics don't always capture the effect of an interior defender who commands double-teams, collapses the pocket and creates opportunities for everyone around him.
Carter has quickly developed into that type of player.
Carter appeared in 12 games last season and recorded 33 tackles, three sacks and seven passes defensed. He also produced 29 quarterback pressures and 12 quarterback hits despite receiving constant attention from opposing offensive lines.
The sack total doesn't tell the entire story. Carter’s ability to push the pocket prevents quarterbacks from stepping forward, forcing them toward Philadelphia's edge rushers. He can also defeat blocks quickly enough to disrupt running plays before they develop.
Through three NFL seasons, Carter has registered 108 tackles, 13.5 sacks, 37 quarterback hits and 12 passes defensed. He has already earned two Pro Bowl selections and was named a second-team All-Pro following the 2024 season.
Those accomplishments help explain why his peers placed him among the league’s top 30 players.
Philadelphia signed Carter to a four-year, $152 million extension with $106 million guaranteed at the start of training camp. The agreement made him the highest-paid defensive tackle in NFL history and secured one of the franchise’s defensive cornerstones through 2031.
The Eagles had already signed Jordan Davis to a long-term extension, ensuring that two foundational pieces of their interior defensive line will remain together.
Carter now enters his fourth season with the security of a record-setting contract and expectations that match his talent. Philadelphia doesn't simply need him to produce sacks. Vic Fangio’s defense is built around Carter affecting protections, occupying multiple blockers and creating favorable opportunities for the players beside him.
The Top 100 rankings can always inspire debate, but Carter’s place among the league’s elite should create little controversy. He has become one of the NFL’s most disruptive defensive players, and at 25 years old, his best football may still be ahead of him.
