The Joplin Eagles defense looked to be in midseason form and the Joplin offense turned in an impressive performance in a 31-7 win in its season opener against Kickapoo Friday night at Junge Field.
It was clear from the opening kick that the Eagles defense came to play. After the first two Kickapoo plays resulted in lost yardage, Joplin's Gabe Kabutha intercepted a pass by Kickapoo quarterback Brock Brooks on a third and 19 and returned it to the Chiefs 37-yard line at the 10:26 mark of the first quarter.
Joplin (1-0) running back Trae McCadney kept the Eagles' first drive alive when he carried a pile of defenders seven yards up the middle to the Kickapoo 12-yard line on a fourth down and two.
Quarterback Daniel Rose then found an open Trent McCadney, who made his way 12 yards into the end zone to give Joplin a 6-0 lead at the 6:35 mark of the opening quarter. Eagle kicker Toby Ipsen converted the kick to put the Eagles up 7-0.
After the Eagle defense forced a three-and-out on Kickapoo’s second possession, Joplin fumbled the punt and the Chiefs took over the ball at their own 46-yard line with 4:50 left in the first quarter. The Joplin defense held and the Eagles took over at their own 33-yard line.
Trae McCadney muscled his way for 14 yards to the 47-yard line and added another run of 12 yards in a drive that was capped by a 15-yard Trae McCadney run to the one-yard line. Trae McCadney punched the ball in on the next play to put Joplin up 13-0. Ipsen’s foot again was true and Joplin held a 14-0 lead with 1:03 left in the quarter.
Neither team could manage to put points on the board in the second frame, but Joplin’s Kabutha snagged his second pick of the game to thwart a Chiefs’ potential scoring drive with 5:25 left in the half.
The Eagles put together a 93-yard scoring drive on their first possession of the second half. The drive was highlighted by a 29-yard run by Trae McCadney and two long runs by Elijah Hurrell. The drive was capped off by a 17-yard pass from Rose to tight end Zaveon Williams on the right side with 6:36 left in the third quarter.
The Eagle defense logged its third interception of the game when defensive back Layne Royle snagged a Brooks pass and returned it to the Kickapoo 32-yard line with five minutes left in the quarter.
The Eagles moved the ball down to the Chiefs 17-yard line courtesy of a Kickapoo personal foul, setting up a McCadney 17-yard sprint into the endzone that gave Joplin a 28-0 lead with 4:57 left.
On the ensuing kickoff, Chiefs return man Ahmaun Fowler sprinted 90-yards to the Joplin 7-yard line, but the Joplin defense showed its mettle with a goal-line stand. Linebacker David Bhend swatted a Brooks pass attempt, the defensive front smothered 6’4” 235-lb. Brody Wilson at the 1-yard line after a run off a direct snap and stuffed Wilson again on a fourth and goal at the one to take over on downs with 3:26 left in the third.
Joplin then drove the length of the field on a drive that included a long gain by Hayden Wolf, who snagged a deflection on a pass intended for Trent McCadney. Ipsen made it a 31-0 game when he punched a 27-yard field goal through the uprights with 40 seconds left in the quarter.
Kickapoo (0-1) avoided the shut out when Brooks ran the ball into the end zone from the left side with 3:47 left in the final quarter. Wyatt Stevens Lewis’ point after was good to make the score 31-7.
Joplin travels to Lebanon next Friday.
