The Philadelphia Eagles have a franchise quarterback, Jalen Hurts.

During Hurts' career, they've rotated through a variety of backup quarterbacks. It's kind of how they operate.

That could mean Tanner McKee is next up -- not to start, but to be traded.

ESPN's Ben Solak listed McKee as a logical trade candidate in a new article on Tuesday.

"The backup QB on Howie Roseman's roster is always in danger of being dealt," Solak writes. "McKee typically looks strong in the preseason, and he looked acceptable in two Week 18 starts while throwing to the Eagles' backups. He is an older prospect (will be 26 next season), but he still has a developmental arc in that he has never seen extended game action."

To make his point particularly clear, Solak puts a couple of other quarterbacks down as a comparison.

"In a world where Will Howard might be starting for the Steelers or Quinn Ewers could be in for the Dolphins, McKee deserves a camp fight somewhere," Solak writes.

While that isn't particularly kind to Howard or Ewers, it's also a fair point.

There's a lot of QB uncertainty this offseason. Maybe even a team like the Vikings could bring in McKee and have him compete with J.J. McCarthy.

McKee was a sixth-round pick by the Eagles in the 2023 NFL Draft. If they can turn him into a mid-round draft pick, they've already come out ahead there.

Of course, Philly shouldn't trade McKee without another logical backup QB plan. But if they have one of those, they can try to maximize McKee's value in the meantime.
