Dec. 17—MITCHELL — Dakota Wesleyan University women's basketball jumped four spots to No. 10 in the latest NAIA coaches top-25 poll issued on Wednesday.
The Tigers (7-4, 5-2 GPAC) moved up from No. 14 after two victories over No. 9 Concordia (Neb.) and College of Saint Mary (Neb.), despite falling to two of the top-four teams in the country on the road — No. 2 Dordt 86-81 and No. 4 Dakota State 74-62 — since the last poll. The NAIA top-25 is issued every two weeks, but due to Christmas coming up, the next poll won't be published until Jan. 14.
There are three top-10 Great Plains Athletic Conference women's teams in this week's poll, including No. 2 Dordt, No. 9 Concordia and No. 10 DWU, while Briar Cliff sits at No. 13 and Hastings is in the receiving votes category. Aside from No. 2 Dordt and No. 4 Dakota State, the rest of the top-five includes Bethel (Tenn.) at No. 1 followed by No. 3 Campbellsville (Ky.) and No. 5 Marian (Ind.). The Tigers and Campbellsville will play in Hawaii on Dec. 19.
Junior forward Emma Yost has led the way for the Tigers this season with 15.8 points per game, shooting 48.6% from the field and 43.5% from 3-point range. Senior guard Rylee Rosenquist adds 12.1 points per contest and a team-best 76.1% from the free-throw line. Avery Broughton and Shalayne Nagel provide an additional scoring punch, combining for 247 total points on the year.
In the NAIA men's top-25 poll, Grace (Ind.) remains at the No. 1 spot, with Freed-Hardeman (Tenn.), Cumberlands (Ky.), Arizona Christian and Langston (Okla.) rounding out the top-5, with previous No. 4 Montana Tech dropping to No. 19. The GPAC is represented by Northwestern at No. 17, dropping one spot from 16th in the last poll, and Concordia dropped out of the top-25 after being tabbed at 24th due to back-to-back losses against Midland and Dordt in GPAC action on Dec. 10 and Dec. 13, respectively.
The Tiger women are headed to the Shark Tank for the Hoops in Hawai'i Classic in Honolulu where they will face the University of Providence (Mont.) on Dec. 18 and No. 3-ranked Campbellsville (Ky.) on Dec. 19 before coming back home to face Northwestern in a GPAC contest on Dec. 30 at the Corn Palace.
