Nov. 9—CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa. — A cold shooting effort spelled defeat for the Dakota Wesleyan University men's basketball team on Sunday afternoon.
Taking the court for the second time in as many days, DWU was controlled by Mount Mercy (Iowa), who handed the Tigers an 82-60 loss, which was their first defeat of the season.
DWU shot 23-for-61 (37.7%) from the field and 6-for-25 (24%) from 3-point range in the loss. Meanwhile, Mount Mercy maintained a shooting percentage above 50% until late in the contest, finishing 28-for-58 (48.3%) and carving out a 40-24 advantage in points in the paint. The Mustangs also made all 21 of their free throws.
By halftime, DWU already faced a sizable deficit, trailing 47-33. Paced by a 27-point effort from Brayson Laube, MMU (3-3) led by as many as 25 points in the second half before DWU sparked a 10-0 run to get back within 71-56 with seven minutes to play. But a nearly five-minute scoring drought ensued for the Tigers, spoiling any chance of a late rally.
Just two Tigers reached double figures, as Easton Neuendorf scored 15 points to lead the Tigers, while Anthony Riggans added 11 points, five rebounds, two steals and two blocks. Tyson Stevenson had eight points, and Randy Rosenquist Jr. offered six points, six rebounds, two assists and two steals. Gavyn Strand had seven points off the bench.
Alongside Laube's big effort, MMU got 19 points, five rebounds, four assists and three steals from Aidan Yamilkoski as well as 17 points and six rebounds from Jaxson Fried. Kaden Johnson's 10 points and four rebounds gave the Mustangs a fourth double-digit scorer.
DWU (3-1) is back at home on Wednesday, Nov. 12, to host Valley City State for a standalone 7 p.m. game at the Corn Palace.

The Tigers' sophomore guard, a product of Hamlin High School and native of Lake Norden, tossed in a career-high 23 points on the strength of five 3-pointers to pace all scorers. He more than doubled his prior career best of 11 points from DWU's prior game, a home win over Bismarck State on Nov. 4.
Hannibal-LaGrange got out to an 11-2 lead in the first three minutes before DWU found its footing. The Tigers eventually took their first lead of the game at 29-27 on a Stevenson 3-pointer with 5:12 to go before halftime. Forging ahead 43-31 at the break, DWU never trailed again.
The Tigers led by as many as 15 points at 66-51 with eight minutes remaining, though the hosts stormed back and even tied the contest at 70-all with 51 seconds to play.
DWU reclaimed the lead on a Randy Rosenquist Jr. putback layup with 26 seconds left. HLU then missed a 3-pointer for the lead, Anthony Riggans got the rebound and was fouled and made a pair of free throws for a four-point Tiger lead. Andrew Younan split a pair of free throws moments later, and DWU executed the foul-up-three strategy late in the game to seal the victory.
Stevenson finished 8-for-13 on field goals. Rosenquist had 21 points, followed by 10 points and eight rebounds from Steele Morgan and 10 points and six assists from Easton Neuendorf.
