Despite the college basketball season still months away, the excitement for the Duke Blue Devils is still very high.
As it is each offseason, the expectations for the upcoming campaign are through the roof for Jon Scheyer's team. For a program that lost in devastating fashion in the Elite Eight, Duke is itching to get back on the court.
Although there will be some new faces with the No. 1 recruiting class, a good transfer portal class and some key returning players, this team should still be near the top in terms of favorites to win it all.
One player that is getting attention is freshman Joaquim Boumtje-Boumtje. The five-star center most recently played at FC Barcelona and picked Duke over interest from other big programs.
His appearance on a recent podcast with Dame Sarr is drawing a lot of attention due to the UNC-Duke rivalry, but there's something else he said that should be getting attention as well. He was asked to give a self-scouting report of his own game and he's confident he can't be put in a box.
Here is what Boumtje-Boumtje had to say about his own game:
"I think I'm just an all-around guy," he said. "I can do whatever I need. I can shoot the ball. I can dribble the ball. I can pass the ball. I can make plays on defense. If you ask me to do something, I can do it. I'll learn how to do it.
"I really don't know if I can be put in a box."
Boumtje-Boumtje has the size to be a dominant post player but his skillset is what is really intriguing. As a big man, he's a very good passer, can drive the lane, has an outside shot and can dribble well. That makes him a player who could potentially play on the wing as a 3 or a 4 in addition to a 5.
It will be interesting to see how Scheyer wants to deploy Boumtje-Boumtje and how much playing time he gets early. He will be at Duke for a minimum of two seasons, giving Blue Devils' fans some excitement and hope.
