Oklahoma State quarterback Drew Mestemaker is the winner of the Big 12 Preseseason Newcomer of the Year award. Very big things are expected from the redshirt sophomore, who was one of the top draft prospects to appear at The Star in Frisco, Texas, for Big 12 Media Days this past week.
Oklahoma St. is starting over, with a new head coach in Eric Morris, as the Mike Gundy era finally ran its course in 2025. When Morris moved over from North Texas, he brought his QB1 with him in Mestemaker.
In meeting the media this past week, Morris extolled the virtues of Mestemaker.
“I got some text messages about how talented he was, but I got so many text messages from friends and colleagues about how humble he was, how good of a human he was, how well he communicated," Morris said while appearing on the ESPNU broadcast of Big 12 Media Days, before then continuing:
"How good he was with the younger generation, and trying to help them, and that's a position that can make your whole team better."
Mestemaker, who wowed 'em at the Massing Passing Academy this summer, is moving up to the Big 12 from the American Athletic Conference. And in doing so, he's continuing the trend that has defined his career.
Mestemaker has consistently been like The Jeffersons, because he's "moving on up."
In high school, he was the backup QB both his junior and senior year. The Austin native was literally a zero star recruit when he entered college, enrolling at North Texas as a walk on. He began the 2024 season as the Mean Green's QB5, and yet here he is now, winner of the 2025 Burlsworth Trophy.
It's an honor bestowed upon the nation's best player who began his collegiate career as a walk on. And it's this positive trajectory that has seen the Texan's draft stock soar.
It always seems like there is another ceiling for him to reach, and then he blows right past that. NFL scouts and GMs will love that about him.
