Houston (61-59) defeated San Francisco (49-70), 6-3 in 10 innings, on Monday at Oracle Park in San Francisco, California. 28,070 were in attendance for the opener of a three-game series.
Two former Vols started for the Giants in Game 1.
Blade Tidwell pitched 5.2 innings and recorded six strikeouts and 96 pitches, including 62 strikes, against 22 batters. The right-handed pitcher allowed four hits, one run (one earned) and one walk.
The Astros hit four groundouts and seven flyouts against Tidwell.
Drew Gilbert played center field and went 1-for-3. He hit a solo home run 407 feet in the seventh inning and hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Bryce Eldridge, in the fourth inning.
Game 2 between the Giants and Astros is slated for Tuesday at 9:45 p.m. EDT. A series finale will be contested Wednesday with first pitch scheduled for 3:45 p.m. EDT.
