San Francisco (3-4) opened a four-game series against the Mets (3-4) on Thursday. The Giants won Game 1, 7-2, at Oracle Park in San Francisco, California.

Former Vol Blade Tidwell made his 2026 debut with the Giants on Thursday. He pitched three innings in relief and earned his first MLB career save.

Tidwell totaled two strikeouts and 37 pitches, including 24 strikes, against nine batters. He allowed two hits. New York hit two ground outs and three fly outs against Tidwell.

First-year San Francisco manager and former Tennessee baseball head coach Tony Vitello met with media after the game and recapped Tidwell’s performance.

“It’s hard to say it wasn't an outstanding outing,” Vitello said. “Then as the season goes on, you know, I haven't been here before, but I watch the games on TV, and of course you got to do it with a college staff, you got to manage the bullpen, and the best managers of that are the pitchers. If guys can do stuff like that, and they can pick each other up in different fashions, it can go a long way, not just in the next game, but maybe even the next couple games.

“He was good. It’s interesting. He got to throw against, he comes right back up, got to throw against his old team, and probably got to throw right away off the plane. I don't know if that’s, I definitely have no idea what that's like, I don't know if that's good or bad.”

San Francisco recalled Tidwell from Triple-A Sacramento on Thursday. On July 30, 2025, the Giants traded pitcher Tyler Rogers to the Mets for Tidwell, pitcher José Buttó and former Vol outfielder Drew Gilbert.
