Brees is amazing. He's playing the best football of his career and he has no signs of slowing down.

Drew Brees will almost certainly break Peyton Manning’s all-time passing record in Peyton Manning’s hometown.

It will be a true celebration in a city famous for parties if and when the Saints legend notches 201 passing yards, eclipsing Manning’s career yardage record against Washington on Monday night in New Orleans. There will likely be a debate about where Brees ranks all time. These days, Tom Brady is considered tops, with plenty of good reason. So where does Brees belong in relation to Manning.

Me? I’ll take Brees.

More a testament to rule changes than the players
Maybe not rule changes completely but changes in philosophy as well. Up until the West Coast offense and the Run & Shoot became all the rage, the league was more run oriented to balanced. This is what makes Jim Hart's near 35K yards that much more remarkable.

true... but some time back defenses used to maul a wr to avoid allowing a catch...and qb's got destroyed when they dropped back.
now defenses arent allowed to actually touch anybody...makes it really easy for a wr to get open...most of these guys would never got off the line twenty years ago

Gives you an idea how good

Marino
Elway
Moon
Tarkenton
Fouts
Montana
Unitas

were. They are on the list, and had to play in an era where it was not against the law to touch someone on offense.

When looking at Tarkenton, and Unitas, it is really amazing since they played at a time where you could just kill the wide receiver at any point and time.

Wasn't it a few years ago when 4 or 5 QB's threw for over 5,000 yards? Eli Manning chief among them.

They still had pass interference but once a receiver touched the ball, a defender was able to potato him. Look at this hit from Jack Tatum in the SB against Minnesota:

And don't forget he ended Darryl Stingley's career and effectively shortened his life with a hit. It took 40 years after Stingley's injury before the NFL did anything to protect receivers.
