As NFL draft talk heats up, one popular prospect that’s been linked to the Dallas Cowboys might be cooling off as an option for the No. 12 overall selection. The Cowboys might not be as high on Miami pass rusher Rueben Bain, and it has more to do with his measurables than his potential legal issues.

Bain has been commonly mocked to the Cowboys throughout the draft process, but it’s a prediction that could be losing steam. The recent report of Bain being cited for careless driving after a crash in 2024 that resulted in the eventual death of passenger Destiny Betts may have affected the prospects standing on some draft boards, but most teams were aware of the incident before it was made public.

The Cowboys may be leaning away from Bain because of a more common reason, a trait in his athletic profile, his short arms. According to former team and NFL scout Bryan Broaddus, Dallas would pass on Bain due to his arm length, not the fatal crash.

Will Rueben Bain's involvement in a fatal 2024 car crash affect his draft stock, & does it affect how Broaddus views the player?

Broaddus feels it’s unlikely because “teams get locked in on measurables” and the Cowboys org doesn’t believe he can be an outlier. Fans will find out soon enough, but if Bain were available and the Cowboys passed on him with their desperate need for a pass rusher, it could cause massive displeasure with the fanbase.

Now the question must be asked, is this a smokescreen as the draft approaches, or would the Cowboys really be out on Bain despite his production and tape? The team has such a need for an edge rusher, it’s difficult to believe they would pass on one of the top options because of a measurable which hasn’t stopped him from dominating at the collegiate level. The Cowboys have been linked to Bain and mentioned as a team that would be willing to trade up to draft him in previous reports, but now they wouldn’t draft him?

Broaddus is one of the most plugged-in analysts covering the Cowboys, so it’s difficult to believe he didn’t get this feeling from somewhere. Is he being used in hopes the team can somehow land Bain with the 12th pick, and avoid teams trading in front of them? Or is Dallas truly out on one of the best pass rushers in the draft?

This is part of what makes the NFL draft so much fun! Reading through the tea leaves and trying to decipher what’s real as teams try whatever they can to end up with their favorite players. All this news concerning Bain is coming at an awfully convenient, or inconvenient, time.

The challenge now is to figure out if the Cowboys are in or out on Rueben Bain. Time will tell.
