Dr. Phil has diagnosed Josh Allen. The Buffalo Bills quarterback has a clinical case of greatness.

The television psychologist highlighted Allen as a case study in perseverance and resilience, calling the NFL MVP "the poster boy in meritocracy" for his relentless journey from Firebaugh farmland to football fame.

"(Allen) is all about hard work, making his breaks, and creating everything that he has in his life right now," said Dr. Phil, who spent nearly 10 minutes on his The Real Story podcast praising Allen as the ultimate example of determination being rewarded. "He worked hard. He believed in himself. He earned every single thing he got, and he never gave up."

Dr. Phil believes we all have a lot in common with Allen. You don't need to be a record-setting quarterback who is engaged to a Hollywood star and celebrating a $330 million contract extension.

Dr. Phil went from couch to couch and drew up life lessons through Allen that everyone chasing something bigger than their circumstances can relate to.

It wasn't easy for Allen to achieve his dreams but he bet on himself. He grew up in a small town in California and worked on the family farm after practice at Firebaugh High School. He was overlooked by every major college football program, didn't receive a scholarship offer and played two years of junior college

"Nobody noticed him," Dr. Phil said. "Did he give up? Not a chance."

Allen was knocked down, just like all of us. (Allen a bit less nowadays; he had the lowest sack rate in the NFL last year.) He chose to get back up and refused to quit.

"How many times have they told you no?" Dr. Phil asked. "You're not not good enough. You don't get to do it. You don't get to play. You don't don't get the job you want. You don't get the raise you want. You don't get the promotion you want. You don't get the things that you have as a dream. You don't give up. He didn't give up."

Allen sent a mass email to hundreds to Division I coaches with a link to his Reedley College highlights. He was rejected by all but one. The University of Wyoming made him an offer and Allen broke his collarbone four passes into his Wyoming career. He returned to start his final two seasons. The Bills selected him No. 7 overall in the 2018 NFL Draft and Allen has the most combined touchdowns in the NFL since.

"What is it that you have not achieved yet and what are you doing to get it? Here's the thing, the next year, the rest of 2025 is going to go by whether you're doing something to get closer to your dreams and goals, or not," Dr. Phil said. "The difference between winners and losers is winners do things that losers don't want to do. And you have to understand that small changes add up to big results across time."

Everyone has been doubted, had doors close, received rejection letters or experienced moments that test belief in themselves.

Allen didn't wait for the world to believe in him. He made it impossible not to.

"You gotta believe in yourself. You gotta stand up for yourself. You've got to step out there and say 'Hey, I deserve a shot,'" Dr. Phil said. "Do it like Josh Allen did. Believe in who you are. Step up for yourself. Reach for what you believe you deserve, and claim it. And you can't claim it if you don't name it.

"So decide what you want, decide what you deserve and step out there and grab on with both hands. And if it slips out, grab it again. Josh Allen did it. He didn't make excuses. He just made opportunities. You can do the same thing."

Here are some underlying causes and visible symptoms of Allen's meteoric rise:

Causes of greatness

  • Chronic work ethic
  • Acute belief in self despite odds
  • High tolerance for rejection
  • Repeated exposure to "no"
  • Long-term refusal to quit
  • Resiliency at cellular level

Symptoms of greatness

  • An eventual college scholarship
  • First-round pick in NFL draft
  • Most touchdowns all-time in a player's first seven seasons
  • NFL Most Valuable Player
  • $330 million contract extension
