INDIANAPOLIS --- One day. Two games. Two state championships.
That was how Saturday looked for athletic trainer Kacey Kaelin.
“It’s been an exciting weekend,” the 26-year-old Kaelin. “This is probably going to be the highlight of my career. This is one of the best days of my life.”
For the past two years, Kaelin has been the athletic trainer for the Borden and Eastern (Pekin) high school athletics programs. Saturday, in a matter of hours, both girls’ basketball teams hoisted their state championship hardware.
First, it was Borden as they took down Fremont 51-31 in the Class A state championship. Kaelin was with the Braves amidst their on-court celebration, but that’s not the craziest part.
Hours later, she did it again with Eastern after they took down Oak Hill in the Class 2A state finals.
“I think just the small community that we have, and just the closeness of them growing up together and playing basketball since they were younger,” Kaelin said of both programs. “And just not even a team, they’re a family.”
Borden and Eastern are just six miles apart, and the closeness of the community was apparent. After Borden’s win in the first game, many fans and players stuck around to see Eastern pull off their victory.
When talking about balancing her duties, Kaelin didn’t shy away from acknowledging the challenge.
“At first it was a little challenging, but I got the hang of it pretty quickly,” Kaelin said. “It’s a pretty even split.”
She works for Baptist Health, which was responsible for her assignment to both Borden and Eastern.
Kaelin, who lives in Salem, reflected on the impact Saturday had on the local community.
“I just can’t believe that this opportunity to have both of my schools and then have them come together like this," she said. "So, it’s amazing.”
