Serhou Guirassy scored a late goal to lead Borussia Dortmund to a 1-0 win over Rot-Weiss Essen on Monday, sending them into the second round of the German Cup.

Dortmund had a difficult time trying to break the defence of the third-division team, but finally found some space in the 79th minute.

After Essen cleared a ball in the box, it fell to Ramy Bensebaini, who found Guirassy on the edge of the box. The forward controlled the ball before spinning round and slotting it into the net.

Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel was also crucial for the win as he made two stunning saves to deny Essen big chances in the first half.

Earlier on Monday, Mainz defeated Dynamo Dresden 1-0, Fortuna Dusseldorf won 4-2 at FC Schweinfurt and Hertha Berlin also made it to the second round after a 5-3 win on penalties over Preussen Münster.

The first round of the Cup will be complete next week when champions VfB Stuttgart travel to Eintracht Braunschweig on August 26 and Bayern Munich visit Wehen Wiesbaden the day after.

Bayern and Stuttgart had their games postponed because they faced each other in the German Super Cup last Saturday, which Bavarians won 2-1.
