Donald Trump has a unique connection to the 2026 FIFA World Cup because he was president when the United States helped win the bid and is president again as the tournament arrives.
That timing is what makes his role unusual. World Cup planning usually stretches across several administrations, but Trump is tied to both the winning bid moment and the actual hosting moment.
It does not mean he single-handedly delivered the tournament. But politically, his name now sits at both ends of the World Cup’s American journey.

Donald Trump was president when United States won 2026 FIFA World Cup bid
The United States, Canada, and Mexico were awarded the 2026 FIFA World Cup on June 13, 2018, after the joint North American bid beat Morocco in the FIFA vote.
At that time, Trump was in his first term as president. His administration supported the bid, and the United States was positioned as the centerpiece of the tournament, with most matches and the final set for American soil.
That made the win a major sports moment during his presidency. The 2026 World Cup became the first men’s tournament planned for three host nations and the first expanded 48-team edition.
Trump’s political style also shaped the bid conversation, because questions around travel, immigration and international perception followed the United States throughout the process.
Donald Trump is president again as 2026 FIFA World Cup reaches United States
The unusual part is what happened later. Trump left office, then returned before the World Cup actually kicked off, putting him back in the White House for the event his administration had seen awarded eight years earlier.
That gives him a rare full-circle sports-politics moment. He was there when the tournament was secured, and he is now in power as the United States prepares to host the world.
The tournament itself is much bigger than one president. It belongs to the United States, Canada, Mexico, FIFA, the host cities, and the fans who will fill stadiums across North America.
Still, Trump’s timing is hard to ignore. Few global sporting events take this long from award to kickoff, and even fewer end up bookended by the same American president in two separate terms.
That is his unexpected World Cup connection. Trump did not just inherit the 2026 tournament; he was part of the political backdrop when it was won, and he is part of it again when it finally arrives.
