The days of driving, chipping and putting are upon us.
Golf courses and driving ranges across the state have reopened for business. If you’re not ready for the hours-long commitment of a round of 18 just yet, there are a handful of strictly nine-hole public golf courses on the South Shore that can do the job.
Here’s where you can hit nine holes, or double it for 18, from Quincy to Duxbury.
Golfing in Brockton? Reserve a tee time: Try your game at these 8 public golf courses
This municipal nine-hole course is located at 20 Reservoir Road. The course is par 35 and stretches 2,873 yards.
For Quincy residents, it costs $30 to play a round of nine and $45 for 18 holes from Monday through Thursday, excluding carts. From Friday through Sunday and holidays, those costs increase to $40 and $55, respectively. Tack on another $10 to these prices for non-residents.
There is a waitlist for memberships, but the public can play any time Monday through Thursday, before 10 a.m. on Fridays and after 3 p.m. on weekends and holidays. The public can reserve tee times three days in advance by calling 617-472-8466 or at furnacebrookgolf.com.
The new $14 million clubhouse opened April 5. It features a restaurant and bar run by The Fours in Quincy and four golf simulators.
The first hole of the course holds a special place in the Guinness World Records as the location of the longest hole-in-one sunk by a woman. Marie Robie achieved the ace in September 1949 at a distance of 393 yards.
This semi-private course at 100 Quarry Hills Drive has three different nine-hole courses to choose from. The Granite and Milton courses are par 36, while the Quincy course is par 35.
From the black tees, the Granite course is 3,340 yards, the Milton course is 3,478 yards and the Quincy course is 3,395 yards.
Tee times can be reserved up to four days in advance by phone at 617-689-1900 or online at granitelinks.com. The course offers memberships but has a waitlist. For non-members, a round of nine is only available any time Monday through Wednesday or daily after 5 p.m. for $90, the most expensive on this list.
There's also a public driving range open year-round daily from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., except Mondays when the range opens at 1:30 p.m. A bucket of balls costs $16.
Be mindful that collared golf shirts are required.
Granite Links boasts three restaurants throughout the year: The Tavern, open year-round for lunch, brunch and dinner, and two seasonal patio bars, Crossing Nines and the Links, open spring through fall. The Links is taking reservations this year for the outdoor couches with a $600 minimum spending.
This par 36 course at 117 Clubhouse Drive in Weymouth covers 3,117 yards from the black tees.
The course offers memberships. To play nine holes Monday through Thursday, it costs $32 to walk and $44 with a cart, according to the website. From Friday through Sunday and holidays, it costs $37 to walk 9 holes and $49 with a cart. The prices double for 18 holes.
Tee times can be reserved online at golf.weathervanegolfclub.com.
If you’d like to hit a few balls before going on the course, note that the Weathervane driving range is not located on-site. The driving range is a five-mile drive away located at 306 Whiting St. in Hingham.
The restaurant at Weathervane is open from 11:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. and pizza until 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday; 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Sunday with brunch from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
'A neighborhood spot': Weathervane in Weymouth caters to more than just golfers
This nine-hole course is 2,700 yards and a par 34 or 35, depending on where you tee off from one of the longer holes. It’s the shortest on this list.
Located at 164 Washington St., Strawberry Valley is open from 6 a.m. to sundown, seven days a week.
For now, the only way to book a tee time is to call 781-347-4877. The manager said they’re working on an online booking portal.
While it’s subject to change, a round of nine with a cart during the week is $35 and $49 for 18 holes. On the weekends, it’s $36 to play nine holes and $53 for 18 holes. Plus, Abington residents get a discount.
The manager emphasized the course’s family-friendly nature. While it doesn’t have a driving range, there is a putting green for practice.
Snacks and drinks are available for purchase. Options include alcoholic beverages like beer and spiked seltzers, as well as water, soda and Gatorade. The course also offers sweet and salty bites such as chips, cookies and granola bars.
The North Hill Country Club, 29 Merry Ave. in Duxbury, has a nine-hole course. It’s par 36 and is 3,501 yards, the longest on this list. The course was constructed on the former Merry Family farm.
The club offers tee times to nonmembers. It costs $25 to play nine holes during the week and $27 on the weekends, according to the booking portal. For 18 holes, it’s $37 during the week and $39 on the weekends.
The clubhouse has a full bar and casual food options like hot dogs and hamburgers.
Tee times can be booked at northhillcountryclub.com.
