The Miami Dolphins were still in the market for help on the edge ahead of the start of training camp, and they’re bringing in a former top-five draft pick.
The Dolphins signed defensive end Clelin Ferrell, the team announced Monday evening before veterans report for training camp Tuesday and the whole team has its first practice Wednesday.
Ferrell was the No. 4 pick of the 2019 NFL draft out of Clemson, where he was teammates with former Dolphins defensive tackle Christian Wilkins.
Appearing in 98 games with 57 starts, he has recorded 181 tackles, 21 sacks, four forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries in seven NFL seasons. He also can get his hand up and deflect passes at the line of scrimmage when unable to get to the quarterback, batting down 12 passes.
Ferrell was a college standout at Clemson who won a pair of national championships there. He, Wilkins and Dexter Lawrence formed a defensive line trio of players all drafted in the 2019 first round.
Ferrell, though, didn’t quite live up to his draft position, and he only lasted the four seasons of his rookie contract with the Raiders. He went to the 49ers in 2023, Washington Commanders in 2024, started off 2025 as a practice squad player for the Los Angeles Chargers who appeared in a game and was subsequently released in October and then played the second half of the year back with the 49ers.
In a defense that figures to run a 4-3 base under new coach Jeff Hafley, Ferrell can put his hand in the ground as a traditional defensive end. Miami needs help at edge defender, a group led by Chop Robinson and Josh Uche, while hoping to get contributions from some combination of Robert Beal Jr., Cameron Goode, rookie seventh-round pick Max Llewellyn or undrafted rookie Mason Reiger.
To make room for Ferrell, the Dolphins waived defensive lineman Kahlil Saunders, who was an undrafted signing out of Kentucky.
