MIAMI GARDENS — Quinn Ewers was saying all the right things for a player in his position, talking about how all those in the quarterback room want what’s best for the Miami Dolphins. With that, Ewers was doing his best to make it not about him.
But when the focus was on him and the obvious — that Malik Willis is the team’s starting quarterback — Ewers offered an interesting perspective on the situation.
“I like to think I have a long career ahead of me, so sitting back and learning is not the worst thing for me right now,” Ewers said.

Ewers is only 23. He arrived last season as a seventh-round pick out of Texas and appeared in four games, starting three in place of Tua Tagovailoa, including a 20-17 victory over Tampa Bay.
With Tagovailoa off to Atlanta, Ewers would have been in line for playing time if not for the Dolphins signing Willis in free agency. What was Ewers’ reaction when he received the news?
“I was excited to get to work with him, honestly,” Ewers said. “I think he had a great end of the year last year with Green Bay. And to get a guy like that who’s playing good in some big-time games is only going to help me in the long run.”
Ewers made his first start Dec. 21 vs. Cincinnati and passed for 260 yards. The next week, he passed for 172 yards and touchdowns of 63 yards to Theo Wease and 11 to Greg Dulcich. The only other Dolphins rookie to pass for two touchdowns in a first half was Dan Marino.
“I think the way that I was able to bounce back after that and kind of get the team rallied for that Tampa Bay game was cool for me to see,” Ewers said.
A year’s experience has helped Ewers, who appears comfortable in the pocket this training camp as he surveys the field to pick out targets. The game has slowed down for him.
“The wheels aren’t spinning as fast as they were when I first got here,” he said.
Barring injuries to Willis, this figures to be a learning year for Ewers. But he’s pleased with their relationship.
“Malik’s great,” Ewers said. “I think we help each other a lot. Obviously he’s a great player. It’s awesome to have him in the room.”
