Miami Dolphins head coach Jeff Hafley spoke to the media at the outset of training camp starting, and he spoke about many subjects. One of which was whether or not he plans to address the team's less-than-ideal predictions.
Most sportsbooks and analysts believe the Dolphins to be one of the worst teams in the league, and that fact should not be ignored. While Hafley's logic on not bringing it up at the start of camp does make sense, it is not a subject that he should outright sidestep for long.
When Hafley was asked about bringing up the overwhelming opinions on this Miami team, he said he would not do so immediately.
"Not immediately, no," Hafley said of mentioning the projections. "But I think there will be moments that I will. I don't think now is the time for that. Now is the time for us to focus on ourselves and for our guys to go out and win jobs, and for our coaches to put together schemes and develop and get ready to play."
Hafley would rather see the Dolphins get ready for the long season, and for the myriad players on the team to start competing for starting jobs, than to prematurely bring up what the outside perspective of this roster currently is.
"I think certainly there is a time and a place for that. I'd be lying to you if I just said we are going to ignore it. I'd rather not have that be the main focus, but that goes in one ear and you get fired up for a couple of minutes, you leave, and it has to become real again. I think there is bigger things to talk about, foundations to build and maybe if we need a jolt here and there, throw it at them, but nothing that I am concerned about right now," Hafley added.
Again, it makes sense not to address any thoughts on the team, being that it is Day 1, but to sidestep those opinions might be a bit strange. It is always important to use losses and negativity as fuel to pump players up, which the Dolphins coach did say as giving them a "jolt."
Still, the world being what it is, the power of the internet and social media can't often be ignored. That is not to say that Miami players are constantly online and looking at negative opinions, but it would be a safe bet to assume that most have seen the outside noise.
Many players on the team have indicated the Dolphins want to be tough and physical, and one way to prove that is on the mental side. Instead of ignoring what the projections for the 2026 season are, just address them in a meaningful manner and face it head on.
Linebacker Jordyn Brooks also spoke to the media and stated he wanted to "lead the charge" on changing the narratives surrounding the organization.
That is the same kind of attitude that Hafley should have about predictions. They do not mean anything, nor should they.
A sure-fire way to change what the outside perspective of the Dolphins is would be to simply take things head-on and move on. Hafley can certainly do that, but he will also command this team in the manner he so wishes.
Whether or not that leads to success remains to be seen.
