Los Angeles Dodgers starting pitcher River Ryan is back from his hamstring injury, but the Dodgers will keep him in the minors as he continues to ramp up to speed.
Ryan began the year in Triple-A because the Dodgers wanted to take his recovery from Tommy John surgery slowly, and he made just two starts in the minors before landing on the injured list with a hamstring injury. Through those two starts, he allowed five runs through seven innings, four of which were earned.
He made his first start since landing on the injured list Friday, and clearly felt much better than he did earlier in the season. The right-hander allowed just one run on two hits through four innings of work, striking out four batters in the process.
Despite his strong start, though, the Dodgers are still angling to take their time with the prospect.
“We need some time to get River built up,” Dodgers general manager Brandon Gomes said.
Ryan made his MLB debut with the Dodgers in the 2024 season, only making four starts before going down with an elbow injury. He only allowed three earned runs through his four starts, striking out 18 batters in 20.1 innings pitched that year.

Did River Ryan Have a Good Spring Training?
Ryan made his mark on spring training despite only pitching four times in the Cactus League. Three of his four outings during the spring lasted two innings or more despite only making one start, and he only allowed two earned runs through 9.2 innings pitched.
He struck out three or more batters in his final three appearances this spring.

Could River Ryan Pitch for the Dodgers This Season?
While it could take him a few more starts to get up to speed, the Dodgers could very well bring Ryan up before then due to their current pitching circumstances. As far as starters go, both Tyler Glasnow and Blake Snell are on the injured list, leaving the Dodgers no choice but to plug up their rotation with former Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Eric Lauer.
If Ryan continues to produce results as he did Friday in the minors, it’s only a matter of time until he returns to MLB.
When do you want to see the Dodgers call up River Ryan?
