The Los Angeles Dodgers are gearing up for the regular season, and one baseball expert thinks a particular pitcher will have a strong season.

ESPN’s Jeff Passan said he expects River Ryan to return to form and be a big contributor for the Boys in Blue this year.

Ryan, 27, debuted in 2024 “with an array of nastiness before blowing out his elbow four starts into his big league career,” Passan wrote.

“He is back now, and with Ohtani’s limitations, Blake Snell’s unclear status and Los Angeles’ propensity to slow-play the regular season, Ryan should get plenty of innings,” he added. “And if his stuff this spring is any indication, they will be very good ones.”

How Has River Ryan Pitched in 2026 Spring Training?

In three games this spring, Ryan has been excellent.

He has a 1.59 ERA over his 5.2 innings of work, with a WHIP of 0.706.

He has seven strikeouts against three walks and one batter hit by pitch, and he’s allowed only one hit, though that hit was a solo home run.

How Does River Ryan’s Spring Compare to his Regular Season Statistics?

Though he only has those four games in 2024 as a benchmark, Ryan’s spring training numbers resemble those of his regular season.

His ERA in those four games is 1.33, with four runs given up, and three of those earned, and his WHIP was 1.180.

He has allowed 15 hits against 18 strikeouts, and he’s walked nine batters.

With that kind of proven production and a strong spring training in 2026, Ryan is a threat to make the starting rotation, which will likely need some help given the slow-walked injury recovery of Blake Snell and setback in the recovery of Gavin Stone.

Add in the uneven performance of Roki Sasaki and there should be plenty of opportunities for Ryan and others to try to crack the rotation.

He’ll face competition, though, from pitchers like Justin Wrobleski and Emmet Sheehan, with spots already solidly held by Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Tyler Glasnow and Ohtani.

Do you think River Ryan will be a reliable starter for the Dodgers in 2026?
