The Los Angeles Dodgers will option second baseman Alex Freeland to Triple-A when shortstop Mookie Betts returns from the injured list Monday, per Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic.

Freeland is one of a few players who had to fight to maintain their spot on the team when Betts returned, the other’s being Hyeseong Kim and Santiago Espinal, but ultimately he didn’t do enough to warrant his place on the big league roster.

A spell in Triple-A could do the infielder some good, though, as every day at-bats are sure to help him continue to grow.

The 24-year-old has a .235 batting average and a .646 OPS through his first 33 games of the season, hitting just two home runs and driving in eight RBIs over the course of 98 at-bats. Freeland struggled adjusting to big league pitching after breaking camp with the Dodgers, walking at a rate just above league average and striking out at a 28.6% clip, which ranks in the bottom 20% of MLB players.

He posted solid numbers with the glove during his 33 appearances, posting three outs above average and a plus-3 fielding run value, but it wasn’t enough to keep him with the team.

Now that he’s returning to Triple-A and Betts is filling in at shortstop, Kim will likely move over to second base from shortstop and form a platoon with Miguel Rojas, who began the season in a platoon at second with Freeland.
