Dodgers, Diamondbacks to battle for trade for Tigers' All-Star hitter originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.

The Arizona Diamondbacks have a chance to be one of the most fascinating teams heading toward the 2026 MLB trade deadline.

A new article by ESPN's Jeff Passan and Kiley McDaniel on Wednesday lists the Diamondbacks among the "best fits" for a number of the big names who will be in the rumors this summer.

As of Wednesday, the Diamondbacks are 37-36, and 9.5 games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers, but that apparently is enough for people to believe they'll be buyers as the deadline approaches.

One player actually has the Dodgers and Diamondbacks named as two of the best landing spots in a bit of an NL West battle: Gleyber Torres.

The former Yankees infielder is now with the Detroit Tigers, and he's a three-time All-Star.

If the Tigers decide to sell, and trade a guy like Tarik Skubal, Torres will almost certainly be dealt away, too.

The Diamondbacks could use him, if they can outbid the Dodgers.

"Torres has reinvented himself as an ideal leadoff type, prioritizing on-base percentage and consistent contact," Passan and McDaniel write. "He is a perfectly serviceable second baseman defensively, and for on-base-starved teams, he is a reasonable antidote. His $22 million contract does the Tigers no favors, but if that's the price for a contract to get someone who reaches 40% of the time, it's worth it -- even if a team's strength at second relegates Torres to DH duty."

Two other teams are named in the ESPN article as destinations for Torres: the Toronto Blue Jays and Cleveland Guardians.

Many of the players in that piece have more than four landing spots, so it seems the market for Torres might be a little more limited. That should keep the bidding from going out of control.

The Dodgers seem like they win these situations whenever they want to. But maybe another team, like the Diamondbacks, can be spunky and outdo them.
