The Los Angeles Dodgers traded for another starting pitcher during Monday’s trade deadline, adding All-Star left-hander Kris Bubic from the Kansas City Royals.
In exchange, the Dodgers sent back right-hander Carlos Duran, freeing up a spot on the 40-man roster.
Bubic, 28, has spent all six of his MLB seasons with the Royals, posting a 4.14 ERA through 126 games. He made his first All-Star appearance in 2025, posting a 2.55 ERA on the year before going down with a shoulder injury which knocked him out for the remainder of the season towards the end of July 2025.
The southpaw has also struggled with injury this season, and hasn’t thrown in an MLB game since May 14 due to an elbow injury. On the year, he has a 4.11 ERA through nine starts, striking out 51 batters in 50.1 innings pitched.
Bubic made three rehab appearances in June, posting a 10.38 ERA through 4.1 innings with the Omaha Storm Chasers in Triple-A, though the Royals shut him down once again following a setback in his recovery. The left-hander is under team control through 2026, and will become a free agent afterwards.
Bubic has below-average velocity, with his four-seamer averaging just 91.6 mph, but has a solid five-pitch mix which misses bats and generates soft contact at extremely high rates. In his All-Star season, Bubic ranked in the top 10% of MLB in chase rate, as well as the 76th percentile in whiff rate and 87th percentile in average exit velocity.

What Does This Trade Mean for the Dodgers?
Bubic’s arrival provides the Dodgers with some depth in their rotation, but could also be bad news for their injured starters. Blake Snell, Shohei Ohtani and Tyler Glasnow are absent from the Dodgers’ rotation at the moment, all dealing with injuries.
Snell is on his rehab assignment at the moment, but both Glasnow and Ohtani are showing minimal progress in their recovery, so Bubic could be insurance if they don’t return to the mound in time for the postseason.
Who is Carlos Duran?
Duran, 25, has spent the majority of his career in the Dodgers’ organization, with the only exception being the 2025 season, during which he played in the Athletics’ organization. He has spent all of 2026 in Triple-A, posting a 3.38 ERA through 42.2 innings while striking out 61 batters.
The right-hander only has one MLB appearance to his name, during which he allowed three runs in 0.1 innings with the A’s last season. Duran clearly didn’t have a way to break into the Dodgers’ bullpen, so adding a proven MLB starter for the reliever is a smart move from the front office.
